MICK BARRETT & DIGGA

I ‘ve  worked as an operational fire-fighter for Hampshire Fire and rescue service for 27 years, the last 22 at Gosport fire station.

3 years ago my wife and I decided to “puppy walk” for guide dogs for the blind. Having never owned a dog before this was a very steep learning curve.

We’re presently on our 3rd black lab, the first two both having passed and been placed.

From the work with guide dogs I became more interested in dog training, and when the opportunity came to join the Search and rescue dog team I jumped at the chance.

I’ve now have a Springer Spaniel pup called “Digga” who is from working stock. He was born on the 3/3/05 and was eight weeks old when I got him at the beginning of May.

So far I’ve just got him involved in socialising with other dogs and working on his play drive. I’m looking forward to his future training and working with the rest of the team and hope that he’ll eventually qualify as a USAR dog.

UPDATE 29/08/06

Digga is now 17 Months old (Aug 06) and is progressing very well in his training.

He’s matured a lot and his obedience and searching has come on in leaps and bounds in recent months & hopefully we’ll be able to grade within the next few months.

                                                                                       UPDATE 01/10/08

I have recently taken on a yellow Labrador retriever to train as search & rescue dog for USAR.

His names Tyler and he was purchased from the Met Police his DOB is 1/6/2007.

I got him on the 16th June 08 and in the short time I’ve had him he seems ideal for the job. Although a bit on the large side he’s very fit and agile on the rubble.

He’s very bright and quick to learn and thoroughly enjoys his new role.

He settled in very well at home and although at first, Digga was extremely jealous they now get on very well together.
